This project focusses on the symbolic and economic significance of the Danube as the river connects several countries and cultures. Regional differences in water quality are addressed and linked through the research of the UNDP/GEF Danube Regional Project. An aspect of the research is to assess the environmental impact of the Balkans conflict on the Danube and to visit potential pollution “hot-spots”, e.g. the Novi-Sad oil refinery, which was bombed during the war. As a consequence, toxic and hazardous waste was carried down the river Danube.
